Night Light Detroit was a commissioned piece done by Larry and Friends Design Co. for the City of Detroit in Midtown. This was the first ever art installation piece done by the student made organization. This sculpture was installed to bring light and a new atmosphere to Midtown, Detroit as well as bring the community together to an existing park that at the time had nothing to offer. Night Light Detroit premiered on Noel Night in 2013.

Doing a project of this scale came with a hefty set of challenges. These were all things that needed to be considered while formulating design ideas.
The first challenge was the cost of the project. When initially formulating the idea, we knew that a piece of this magnitude would be expensive. We were counting on the Evergreen Atrium project to cover that budget, but when that project’s reliability came into question, we started searching for other funding.
Another challenge was security. With placing a large sculpture piece in a public downtown location, there is the risk of damage and vandalization. We had to ask ourselves how important this piece was to us. By trying to ensure the safety of the piece, we designed it in a way that we felt would give extra protection against such damage.
The last of our biggest challenges was sustainability. How weather-proof could we make the piece? What type of power would last the longest and be most efficient? These were all things that had to be considered while designing the sculpture.
Locaion and Scouting
We had two class sessions dedicated entirely devoted to scouting for locations to build on. We visited over half a dozen different places all over downtown Detroit, including Midtown, Cass Park, Roosevelt Park, and a highway overpass by Old Tigers’ Stadium.
